Crazy Horse Monument

Crazy Horse Monument has been in progress since 1948. It is a 501c3 non-profit so progress has been slow.  There is an extensive visitor's center with many artifacts and history of both the monument and they Native Americans.  The sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski passed away in 1982 and his wife in 2014 but his family of 10 children continue to run the non-profit and the visitor center plus the construction. Ziolkowski worked on Mt. Rushmore and was requested by the Oglala Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear, to start the memorial. See the last picture for the model of how the sculpture will look when completed. The progress is slow.  I wonder how many of the casinos contribute to the non-profit.  Since Indian gaming is a $30 billion dollar per year business, it seems they could be giving a bit to help this see a finish in the near future.  The sculptor and his family intentionally did not want to accept federal funds for the project.

Work is being done on Crazy Horse's arm pointing out to the lands belonging to the Indians which is where many are buried. This was Crazy Horse's answer to the question "Where are your lands?" He said, "out there where my people are buried."
