Custer State Park

Custer State Park is adjacent to the Black Hills National Park where we are staying.  The drive through one section is called the “wildlife” road and it truly was.  We saw mountain goats, buffalo (bison), wild burros, turkeys, and deer.  It is about a 2 hour drive due to the narrow but well paved road.  There are several one-lane tunnels to pass thru and though there were lots of cars, people were respectful of letting cars go in a safe manner.   The rock formations are spectacular.  It is a must-see in this area.

The burros we used to take people up trails years ago and when that ended they set the burros free to roam.  They are said to be the most photographed animals in the park probably they are the most people friendly and safe animals.  Tourists had bags of carrots they were feeding them so of course the burros camp up close!

The bison aka buffalo are everywhere and are not bothered by the cars driving through.  Once endangered, there are now 400,000 in the US and Canada.

Burros would not let me near since I had no food

3 or 4 small tunnels thru Custer

Buffalo not bothered by the cars going through. Highlight of Bailey's trip as the passed by his window!
