Fort Stevens
& Fort Clapsop, Hammond, OR
Fort Stevens
dates back to the Civil War. The fort was built to protect the North against an English
invasion from Canada, should the British join the Civil War on the Confederate
side. Shots were never fired. The fort
was re-activated during World War II. Mines were placed in the Columbia River
to protect it from Japanese invasion.
There was a submarine attack by Japan in 1942. You can see the expansive barracks in the
photo of the diorama. 2500 troops were
stationed here. You can still go into several of the bunkers seen in the photos I took and climb up the hill to the lookout towers.
