Just above the Redwood National Park is the town of Crescent
City. One of the first lighthouses on
the coast, Battery Point Lighthouse operated from 1856 to 1953. During low tide we spotted the starfish, walked
the paths and had some fresh fish! We learned that in the early days, towns
were established 27 miles apart because the Pony Express could only travel that
many miles per day—tired horses! This is
also Sasquatch (Big Foot) country and if you look close, you’ll see one approaching
the house on the cliff J
We rode the gondola up to the high point at Trees of Mystery
in Redwood Nat’l Forest. Bailey even got to ride! Nice ocean view from the top and some
interesting Redwoods – Cathedral tree where weddings are held; huge 19’
diameter 287’ tall tree called the Brotherhood Tree.
We are seeing some Roosevelt Elk along the way – largest variety
of Elk. Named for Teddy Roosevelt, there
are several protected areas for them in Oregon. The group of elk where you see mostly antlers sticking up are all bull elk -- called a "bachelor club" because they will not be looking for a mate until mid August during the "rut."
Love your pictures. It looks like you are on permanent vacation!
