Newport-Depoe Bay July 12-14
Newport and Depoe Bay areas are some of our favorite
spots. We are able to trade our Bend
house for a VRBO in Depoe so have had time to explore this area the most. On this trip, we took a side journey to the
east through Toledo OR along the Siletz River.
Toledo is still a logging town with the large Georgia Pacific paper mill
in operation there. Only about 3500
people live there so pretty small – just 7 miles inland though from
Newport. Newport harbor is a busy
fishing port with great fresh fish. They
also have an aquarium. Our favorite restaurant is Local Ocean just across from
the harbor. If you visit Newport, you
have to eat there. I had to include pics
of our lunch. Clark had a fish and chips
and I had the Black Cod served over butternut squash, peppers, mushrooms, white
beans and chard with a citrus sauce!
Delicious! The beach has a little retro area called Nye Beach filled with specialty shops and food.
The Yaquina Lighthouse is a must see—we have been there before so I took a pic from the beach where we are camped as we did not go up there this time. We saw whales from here spouting spray as there are around 90 local whales that hang in the waters here—none jumped however while we were watching.
